- open-ear speakers;
- an in-lens display;
- the paired phone;
- or more than one output method.
The output experience changes how “hands-free” the product actually feels.
If translated text appears in the lens, you may not need to look down at a phone during a conversation. But that alone does not tell you whether a phone or app is still doing part of the work.
4. Dependencies: What Has to Be Available?
Possible dependencies include:
- paired phone;
- companion app;
- Bluetooth connection;
- user account;
- internet connection;
- downloaded language resources;
- supported region;
- current firmware or app version.
The correct question is not simply:
“Does it need a phone?”
It is:
“Which parts of this exact translation workflow need the phone, app, network or account?”

Can Smart Glasses Translate Without a Phone or App?
Sometimes—but you need to define exactly what “without a phone” means.
There are several very different levels of phone independence.
You Do Not Need to Hold the Phone
The glasses may capture speech and deliver audio or visual output while the phone remains in your pocket.

Truly Standalone Translation
If you require translation with:
no paired phone + no companion app + no network connection
then require the manufacturer to document all three conditions for the exact model and translation mode.

So when a product page says “offline translation,” the useful response is not simply “great.”

If translation is one of your main reasons for buying smart glasses, verify the language details before focusing on secondary specifications.
Exact Supported Languages
Use the current translation-language list from the manufacturer or service.
